English and Maths GCSEs at grades 9-4 are essential qualifications for progressing into further education, higher education, and employment. 

The college integrates the development of these skills into all study programmes. Any student enrols without at least a grade 4 in GCSE English and/or Maths will continue to study and work towards improving these qualifications as part of their programme. 

All students aged 16-18 enrolled on a study programme of 150 hours or more. Those aged 19 to 25 with an Education, Health and Care Plan must continue studying these subjects each academic year, for those who haven’t already met those grades. 

English & Maths at NKC Tonbridge College 

From September 2025, if students have not yet achieved a grade 4 or above in English or Maths, you will be required to attend a minimum of 100 hours per subject over the academic year. This usually will be around three hours per week and take place in morning or afternoon sessions for each subject. These sessions are compulsory part of the study programme, without overlapping with your other lessons. Poor attendance may put your college place at risk.

Students will study GCSE English and Maths. However, a small number of learners may begin with Functional skills as a stepping stone before progressing to GCSE. 

It is a government requirement that students aged 16-18 (and up to 25 with an EHCP) that have not achieved a GCSE Grade 4 or above in English and/ or Maths, will be required to continue studying these subjects as part of your course.
